Eminem: The real Slim Shady

Tuesday, 11 July, 2000, 18:16 GMT 19:16 UK
Eminem
Eminem's rapping style has made him a huge star
By BBC News Online's Chris Charles

Given his deprived background and the gangsta rap culture, it shouldn't really come as a surprise that Eminem has had his fair share of problems and critics. Born Marshall Bruce Mathers III in Kansas City on 17 October 1972, he spent his childhood flitting between there and Detroit, settling in Detroit when he was 12.

Eminem
Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?

Switching schools every few months, the young Eminem found it hard to make friends and nurtured his talent for rapping to make himself heard in the classroom. He eventually dropped out of full-time education and drifted in and out of menial jobs, but a desire to make music was the only thing that really stimulated him. On Christmas Day 1995, wife Kimberly gave birth to their daughter, Haile Jade, and a few months later Eminem released his debut album, Infinite. Although slammed by many for being too derivative, it forced him to revise his approach.

Nothing to lose

"Infinite was me trying to figure out how I wanted my rap style to be, how I wanted to sound on the mic and present myself," he later explained. "It was a growing stage....I had nothing to lose and everything to gain." Far from sitting on his laurels, Eminem threw himself into his new project - which would eventually become The Slim Shady EP - and got his big break when he came second in the 1997 Rap Olympics in Los Angeles. From then on, things moved at an electrifying pace. Shortly after the release of the Slim Shady EP in 1998, hip hop legend and Eminem idol Dr Dre signed the 25-year-old up to his Aftermath label. His Slim Shady LP went triple platinum after hitting number two in the US Billboard charts and went on to win a Grammy. Success was to follow in the UK and across Europe, but his new-found popularity would, perhaps inevitably, lead to problems.

Misogyny

The controversial subject matter of his songs led to accusations of him being a misogynist. His own mother launched a $10m lawsuit against him for using the lyrics "my mom smokes more dope than I do" on the hit My Name Is - a track which sees him wonder which Spice Girl he wants to "impregnate".

Eminem
The rapper ponders his future in the dock

Even his grandmother jumped on the bandwagon after learning how he planned to use the voice of his dead uncle in a song. "He's changed for the worse. He talks filthy to me and is angry and disrespectful. I don't know what's gotten into him," she said, adding: "He's a bitter boy with sad songs who wants to make fame." Despite his critics, Eminem cleared possibly the biggest hurdle of all by overcoming the 'Vanilla Ice syndrome' to become a white rapper respected in the black-dominated world of hip hop. His latest single The Real Slim Shady and album The Marshall Mathers LP have proved huge hits on both sides of the Atlantic and in an ideal world he would have everything to look forward to.

But life could never be that simple for Eminem.

The Real Slim Shady

'He ain't walkin' around obese,' Trick Trick says, clearing up rumors; LP also features Dr. Dre, Kid Rock, Proof.

Eminem Brings Weight To Trick Trick LP; Newcomer Says Slim Shady Hasn't Gotten Fat, Though

By Shaheem Reid

With Eminem's presence sorely missed in the hip-hop scene, the least bit of news about him makes fans and media alike go crazy. The latest rumor surrounding the Detroit MC was that he had ballooned to more than 200 pounds. Word on the street is that Slim Fast even came out and publicly offered him an endless supply of its dietary drink — and a spokesman position!

Trick says Em getting down isn't just a physical thing — Slim Shady is still lyrically sound and ready to knock off heads. In fact, he is just one of the guests on Trick's upcoming independent LP, The Villain.

"Now every body want Eminem not to rap/sing anymore because he's getting fat. what the *beep* because Em's name is Slim Shady so he should be slim in a way. if your name is bull shady, you have to look like a bull it would be 5star if you pick some horn and put them on your head all the time no matter how bad you rap no matter what you rap about you have to look like a bull."

Herald Interview Marilyn Manson - Twiggy is back

Herald: So, Twiggy’s back?

Marilyn Manson: He’s officially back. This is just the beginning. I think we’re going to start writing right away, with the attitude we’ve made music with in the past, without any care at all. For Marilyn Manson, it seems to have become about the death toll, because we get blamed for every act of violence. They don’t have a Grammy award for school shootings, but I guess I would get one if they did, whether I asked for one or not. It’s good to have my partner back, who was the only person able to stare all of that in the face and not be afraid of it. He and I are like brothers in that when we’re together, we’re not afraid of anything. I think that’s how we’ve made our best music.

Herald: How different a person are you without the makeup on - like when you go to the supermarket?

Herald: What’s the secret to freaking people out?

Herald: Is that a dietary thing?

Marilyn Manson: I’ve made my body a place where germs are afraid to live. That’s my diet.

Evanescence was founded by singer, pianist and songwriter Amy Lee and former lead guitarist and songwriter Ben Moody. The two met in 1994 at a youth camp in Little Rock, where Moody heard Lee playing "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" by Meat Loaf on the piano. Their first songs together were "Solitude" and "Give Unto Me", both written by Lee, and "Understanding" and "My Immortal", both written by Moody. The songs were edited by both artists, and they shared equal credit. Two of Lee and Moody's songs found playtime on local radio stations, raising local awareness of the group and demand for a concert. The band eventually appeared live, and became one of the most popular acts in the area. After experimenting with band names, such as Childish Intentions and Stricken, they decided on Evanescence, which means "disappearance" or "fading away" (from the word evanesce, which means "to disappear"). Lee has stated she loves the name because "it is mysterious and dark, and places a picture in the listeners' mind." Their first full-length demo CD, Origin (released in 2000), is relatively unknown. The band also released two EPs. The first is the self-titled Evanescence EP (1998), of which about 100 copies were made. The second is the Sound Asleep EP, also known as the Whisper EP (1999), which was limited to 50 copies. Origin and the EPs contain demo versions of some of the songs on their debut album, Fallen. For example, the recording of "My Immortal", found on Fallen, can also be found on Origin, minus a handful of additional string accompaniments. Only 2,500 copies of this record were produced; in response, Lee and Moody encouraged fans to download the band's older songs from the Internet.

FALLEN

In early 2003, the lineup was completed by Amy Lee and Ben Moody's friends, John LeCompt, Rocky Gray and Will Boyd, all of whom worked on Evanescence's earlier songs. Meanwhile, Evanescence signed on with their first major label, Wind-up Records, and began work on their next album, Fallen. While they were looking to promote Fallen, Evanescence accepted an offer from the video game company Nintendo to perform on the "Nintendo Fusion Tour" which they headlined in 2003. Fallen spent 43 weeks on the Billboard Top 10; has been certified 6x Platinum; and has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide, including 6.6 million in the United States. The album was listed for 104 weeks on the Billboard top 200, and it was one of eight albums in the history of the chart to spend at least a year on the Billboard Top 50.

Have Gun — Will Travel
Los Angeles, June 13 (UPI) -- Detroit rapper Eminem has been signed to star in Paramount's big screen adaptation of the CBS TV series, "Have Gun -- Will Travel." Paramount has extended its 18-month option on the film based on the 1950s Western that originally starred Richard Boone as gunslinger, Paladin, The Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday. In the updated version, Eminem, aka Marshall Mathers, would portray a bounty hunter, the Reporter said. Although the film will be dramatic rather than musical, the rapper will most likely contribute to the soundtrack. Eminem impressed Hollywood with his film debut, "8 Mile", and studios have been in search of other film vehicles to capitalize on his screen appeal.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 2005, Eminem was a subject of criticism in Bernard Goldberg's book 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America, being ranked at #58.

The Golden Age of Grotesque
The album follows the evolution of Manson himself ("Thaeter") through to "Obsequey (The Death of Art)", or "art into a product". This album takes on dual layer storyline, first as a punk rock ballad spouting the notion to live life to its fullest in presumption that there is no future. The second storyline takes a parody to the idea that living life to the fullest has led us into a nihilistic stupidity, hence the "rebel to sell" references within 'The Bright Young Things' and the transformation into a commercially acceptable "happy" icon, Mickey Mouse (Manson posed as Mickey Mouse throughout the album's publicity.) In the song Obsequey there is a dialogs in the background. This dialogs can also be heard on the Japan Bonus Track Baboon Rape Party. It was revealed in a 2007 edition of the British rock magazine Kerrang! that this was intended to be Marilyn Manson's departure from music. His divorce drove him to write GAOG's successor - Eat Me, Drink Me

Mechanical Animals
Mechanical Animals is Marilyn Manson's third full-length album, released on September 15, 1998. It was the #1 selling album for its first week of release, the first for Marilyn Manson's career. The album "tells a story" through its lyrics and music, similar to Manson's other albums and endeavors. Four singles were released off the album: "The Dope Show", "Rock Is Dead", "I Don't Like The Drugs(But The Drugs Like Me)" and only released promotional and with a video, "Coma White". It is Manson's worldwide best-seller. Despite its success, the album was marred by controversy and is notorious for its shocking imagery. Initial sales were extremely strong but it became virtually blacklisted when it became the scapegoat of the Columbine Shootings of 1999.
